Europe and the United Nations commemorate the victims of the Shoah each
winter on the date of Auschwitz's liberation in 1945, and the Italian
Academy marks Holocaust Remembrance Day with an annual academic event
exploring issues of discrimination and crimes against humanity.

Last year, the Academy broadened its focus to explore another minority group
that was targeted in the racism and xenophobia of the Nazi and Fascist
regimes, and that suffered and died along with the millions of Jews: the
Roma and Sinti (known as Gypsies), who were also judged to be "racially
inferior." This year, our Holocaust Remembrance will focus on sexuality and
homosexuality in Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Thousands of men,
primarily, were victims of state persecution and violence: arrested,
institutionalized in mental hospitals, castrated, or imprisoned in jails or
concentration camps where they succumbed to starvation, disease, exhaustion,
beatings, and murder.

Speaker Bios

Elizabeth Leake is professor, Acting Chair, and Director of Graduate Studies
in the Italian Department at Columbia. Her research interests include
Twentieth Century narrative and theatre, psychoanalytic and ideological
studies in Italian literature, fascist Italy, Italian cinema, and early
Danish cinema. She is a recipient of the Modern Language Association Aldo
and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary
Studies for her book The Reinvention of Ignazio Silone (2003) and The
National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for College Teachers and
Independent Scholars 2001. Her latest book, After Words: Suicide and
Authorship in Twentieth Century Italy, was published in February of this
year, and she is co-authoring another entitled Representing Confino.

Edward (Ted) Phillips joined the Museum in 1994 and has been Director of the
Division of Exhibitions since June 2008. Throughout his career at the
Museum, he has been a member of the curatorial teams for special and
traveling exhibitions, and has worked on nearly 40 exhibition projects. He
also helped develop and edit educational and exhibition publications that
accompanied several of the major exhibitions. Ted earned a Ph.D. in Russian
and Early Modern European History from the University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the Museum, he taught Russian history at the
University of Maryland, College Park, the University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University. Between 2000 and 2002,
Ted curated the Museum's traveling exhibition Nazi Persecution of
Homosexuals 1933-1945.

Una mia amica mi chiama disperata: ha perso la password del proprio conto in Italia e non può fare un bonifico importante.
"Fatti spedire la password via email" le dico, perchè questo è quello che accade in America per i conti in banca.
Basta che tu fornisca i dati che hanno su di te e ti inviano la email che avevi registrato quando hai aperto il conto.
No, non si può, perchè la procedura in Italia pare sia che se perdi la password devi recarti alla filiale o in alternativa ti spediscono (ma pare che sia un favore) un pacco di documenti da formare e rispedire.

Tutto per ragioni di protezione del cliente, naturalmente per cui non si capisce come facciano a funzionare le banche americane.

E intanto come fai a fare un bonifico?

Anche se l'America sta andando in una direzione sbagliata (lo dice il 67% degli Americani nei sondaggi), la sua efficienza ti sorprende ancora piacevolmente.

Prendiamo le banche.

Voglio chiudere un conto corrente. Vado in banca con il solo Bancomat (qui si chiama ATM). L'impiegato mi chiede di immettere il pin e mostrare un documento di identità.
Chiude subito il conto e mi chiede come voglio i soldi rimasti. Voglio un assegno di sportello, me lo prepara e me lo da.
E per quanto riguarda gli assegni inutilizzati? Mi dice di buttarli una volta tornato a casa.
Vado via.

Lo racconto a qualcuno in Italia e mi dice invece in Italia bisogna mandare una lettera raccomandata. restituire le carte di pagamento tagliate, e gli assegni inutilizzati.

Giornalisti e utenti di social media sorvegliati

Il Department of Homeland Security ha una National Operations Centers Media Monitoring Initiative, in base alla quale il Governo degli Stati Uniti può raccogliere e conservare dati di utenti di social media e di giornalisti per un periodo di alcuni anni.

Tra i siti; Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, e molti altri.

Lo scopo? Pare che non sia per motivi di sicurezza o antiterrorismo. Infatti secondo le autorità lo sciopo sarebbe quello di raccogliere informazioni sulla consapevolezza di una situazione e per stabilire un quadro operativo comune.

Alcuni vedono questa mossa come un tentativo di iniimidazione contro chiunque non appoggia il Governo e quindi il Presidente, altri arrivano a pensare ad una schedatura che potrebbe in futuro portare per alcuni alla detenzione indefinita, senza possibilità di appello e ricorso ad un giudice, oggi possibile grazie al Patriot Act.

La saga del certificato di nascita di Obama continua.

In Arizona, il famoso e controverso sceriffo Joe Arpajo sta formalmente indagando per stabilire se il certificato di nascita rilasciato da Obama è un falso e addirittura il suo Social Security (codice Fiscale) sarebbe fraudolento.

Nel frattempo il Dipartimento della Giustizia accusa Arpajo (che è di origine messicana e indiana) di discriminazione contro gli ispanici.

Nessuno dei candidati repubblicani entra nello scontro.

Stato dell'Unione

L'economia americana cresce in termini reali solo dell'1.7%. e questo senza considerare l'inflazione reale che porterebbe secondo me ad una crescita addirittura negativa.
Eppure a sentire il discorso di Obama sullo Stato dell'Unione sembrava che l'America fosse in piena ripresa.
Siamo veramente in un mondo dove i fatti non sembrano contare più nulla.

Coca e Onu: quale notizia?

Born in Naples, Italy on March 19, 1955, self-taught guitarist Pino Daniele recorded his first album at the age of 22. From the beginning of his career, it was evident that his passion lay in rock and blues. Greatly influenced by his own cultural background, his music was a successful fusion of tradition and modernity.
His solo debut, Terra Mia, sung in Neapolitan, was the first example of what Daniele called "taramblù," a combination of tarantella, rhumba, and blues. In 1979 his self-titled sophomore record was released, followed by Nero a Metà in 1980, and that same year Daniele was invited to open for reggae superstar Bob Marley for his show in Milan. During the next few years the artist continued exploring his various Mediterranean, African, and Western inspirations-found in albums like Common Ground, a collaboration with American folk singer Richie Havens, and the Middle Eastern-influenced Bonne Soirée-as well as writing soundtracks for films by Massimo Troisi.

In 1989 Daniele took a step toward greater commercial success with the release of the pop record Mascalzone Latino, followed by another deluge of albums, including 1991's Un Uomo in Blues, 1993's Che Dio Ti Benedica (which had two tracks produced by Chick Corea), 1995's Non Calpestare I Fiori Nel Deserto, 1997's Dimmi Cosa Succede Sulla Terra, and 2000's Medina.

Two years later the singer teamed up with fellow Italian stars Francesco DeGregori, Ron, and Fiorella Mannoia for a tour, captured on the appropriately titled In Tour. In 2005 Daniele released Iguana Café, another studio record. Between 2005 and 2010, Daniele released three more studio albums: Il Mio Nome e Pino Daniele e Vivo Qui, Ricomincio da 30, and Electric Jam. In 2010, Daniele released his 13th studio album, Boogie Boogie Man.

On June 24, 2011, in Salerno, Italy, Pino Daniele performed side by side with the English blues rock superstar Eric Clapton. A benefit for children's causes in Italy, the concert sold out to capacity at the Stadio di Cava de' Tirreni.

Guerra con Iran?

In America ci si domanda cosa succederà con l'Iran, specie in relazione alle elezioni presidenziali in America.
Cosa farà Obama? E soprattutto cosa gli conviene fare per essere rieletto. Potrebbe un intervento armato, magari in appoggio ad una azione di Israele, aiutarlo a far aumentare la sua popolarità come è avvenuto con l'uccisione di Osama Bin Laden?

E' chiaro da sempre che l'Iran prima o poi avrà le armi nucleari, a meno che non sia fermato militarmente, e non so cosa succederà all'Europa a quel punto.

Siamo veramente in un periodo storico simile alla caduta dell'impero romano.

Solo che allora non c'erano le atomiche.
